Boundless energy, less sleep, weight loss, clear and glowing skin, neuron’s firing at the speed of light? According to scientists and devotees alike, these are just some symptoms from the latest beauty and health craze – The Green Smoothie.
While juicing has been in vogue for quite some time it seems the juice has been passed up for the green smoothie. Yes I know, the thought of a smoothie usually conjurs up images of milk and banana whipped together to form sweet heaven. The idea of whipping up hand-fulls of spinach not only sounds bizarre but the thought of it seems quite unpalatable until I tried one.
The theory behind this latest craze is to get as much green nutrients into our bodies as we can. To sit and eat through the same amount of greens might take some time but you could die of boredom with all the chewing that is required to ingest those greens. Blending the greens on the other hand takes the work out of breaking the cell walls down so that the nutrients are easily assimilated into the cells very quickly.
These drinks condense the fruit and vegetable, there by multiplying the quantities of enzymes and nutrients we obtain. Many of the important nutrients are encased in the cell walls and need to be ruptured so they can be extracted for use.
To put in a nutshell – Green Smoothies are not only good for you, they taste delicious!
2 cups of filtered water or freshly squeezed juice
juice of 1-2 lemons
2 cups of English spinach leaves
Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until well combined. The liquid should be a beautiful green colour and look creamy.
